Is my ATL membership tax deductible?

If you belong to the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL), there is an agreement in place which enables you to reclaim the tax paid on 90% of your membership fees.

The ATL has negotiated with the tax office to allow its members to receive tax relief on their fees.

An ATL Tax relief claim can include fees paid during the previous four tax years and can also be claimed on subscription fees of some other professional bodies, like the GTC.

Saving money in the future too…

When your ATL tax rebate claim is completed you should receive a new PAYE tax code which will mean you pay less tax in the future. This is because your new tax code will reflect your ATL subscription costs automatically.

ATL members can also claim for…

Many ATL members routinely claim the tax back on equipment and/or specialist clothing they have purchased, such as sports kit or lab coats.

If you drive your car to different work locations, like traveling between several schools or colleges, a mileage claim can be made for your business mileage. Unfortunately, this does not include your regular commute to a permanent workplace.

How to claim your ATL tax relief

When you have your annual ATL subscription fees ready for the last four tax years you can claim either online or by post. The time it takes HMRC to reply is usually around eight to twelve weeks. HMRC have phone support if you need to speak to an advisor.
