What is an R44 form?

An R44 is the form that needs to be completed if you wish to claim for entitlement to a Seafarers’ Earnings Deduction (SED).

The R44 informs the UK tax office of your intention to work at sea, and will ensure that you don’t overpay on your income tax by issuing you with an NT tax code.

When should I fill in an R44?

If you are considering applying for a Seafarers’ Earning Deduction, you must fulfil all of the following criteria:

  • you are a resident in the UK;
  • you are in Pay as You Earn (PAYE) employment;
  • you are working on board a vessel accepted as a ‘ship’ for SED purposes; and
  • if you do not have a contract of employment of at least 12 months, you must have been in continuous employment with the same employer for at least 6 months, working outside the UK.

How can Tax Rebate Services help?

As part of the application process, you’ll need your National Insurance number, Self Assessment Unique Taxpayer Reference (if you have one), and employer’s details including their name, PAYE reference, address, the date that you started your employment, and your expected annual earnings.

You’ll also need details of any planned visits to the UK during the period you’ll be working on the vessel, including the:

  • Start and end dates of your visit
  • Vessel name
  • Vessel type
  • Official vessel registration number
  • Date you think your Seafarers’ Earnings Deduction (SED) should start

You will need to complete a Self Assessment tax return for each year of your claim too.

If all this sounds like a daunting task, we can help you complete your R44, any other tax forms and tax return ensuring you receive the Seafarers’ Earning Deduction you’re entitled to.
